Class of 2020
Lauryn Azu | Lauryn is a rising junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a double major in journalism and mass communications, and Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies. On campus, she serves as managing editor of Bell Magazine, a news site devoted to issues of gender, equity and social justice. As a scholastic journalist, she was a member of the high school apprentice program at The Detroit Free Press; she also served as editor in chief of her high school's quarterly magazine. In summer 2020, she will intern at WDET, an NPR-member station in Detroit. She will also serve as The Institute’s audience engagement editor.
Hadley Chittum | Hadley is a rising senior at George Washington University, where she is majoring in photojournalism. She has interned at two publications based in Richmond, Virginia — RVA Mag, a magazine of culture and politics, and Richmond Magazine, a local, monthly lifestyle outlet. She was also a visuals intern with the Investigative Reporting Workshop where she assisted with shoots for the PBS documentary series Frontline. On campus, she has served as a staff photographer at the student newspaper, The GW Hatchet. She will intern with the visuals team at The Houston Chronicle.
Cheyanne Daniels | Cheyanne recently graduated with a degree in journalism from North Central College. She has interned with Palos Park Life, a community news organization in suburban Chicago. On campus, she has served as an editor at The Chronicle News Magazine and its online news site NCClinked. She was also a news editor at The Xavierite, a student publication at St. Xavier University. Cheyanne, who in summer 2020 will begin graduate studies at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, will serve as a JED Institute Research Scholar, assisting the Institute’s administrators with program development and research into the intersection of ethics, digital technology, and journalism education.
Claire Hao | Claire is a rising junior at the University of Michigan majoring in philosophy, politics, and economics. She has worked for four semesters at The Michigan Daily, where she is the campus life senior news editor. On campus, she is also the co-president of a group that runs online platforms for students of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to share narratives about their experiences in hopes of broadening media representation. She will intern at The Chicago Tribune.
Stephanie Lai | Stephanie is a rising junior at Columbia University majoring in political science. She has held reporting internships at The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Pasadena Star News and The Temecula Valley News. On campus, she covers criminal justice and urban issues for The Columbia Spectator. She will intern at The Los Angeles Times.
Kate Lusignan | Kate is a rising senior at Bowdoin College majoring in English and gender and women’s studies. She has held a reporting internship at The Portland Press Herald. On campus, she is the executive editor of The Bowdoin Orient. Kate was selected for an internship with The Boston Globe; The Globe canceled its internship program this year because of COVID-19, so she will be nominated for a JED Institute internship there in summer 2021.
Salomé Ramírez Vargas | Salomé graduated earlier this year with a degree in journalism from the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She has interned at El Nuevo Día, Puerto Rico’s largest newspaper. She is the editor in chief of Nuestro Barrio: Distrito Cultural de Santurce, which covers a local arts community in San Juan. She is also a web journalist for the newspaper Metro. A survivor of Hurricane Maria, she spent spring 2018 studying at New York University where she helped produce a bilingual news project about migration from the island after the storm. She will intern at The Miami Herald.
Kyle Wood | Kyle is a rising senior at the University of Florida where he is majoring in journalism with an emphasis on sports and media. He has held a reporting internship at The Gainesville Sun, and he serves as a sports correspondent for The Orlando Sentinel. On campus, he is the sports editor at The Independent Florida Alligator. He will intern at The Tampa Bay Times.
Jennifer Zhan | Jennifer is a rising junior at Northwestern University, where she is majoring in journalism with a minor in creative writing. She has served as an associate editor of AsAmNews, a national site devoted to covering the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. On campus, she is a copy chief for The Daily Northwestern, the director of fact-checking for North by Northwestern’s magazine and an editor for NU Asian Magazine. She will intern at The Dallas Morning News.
