Class of 2019
Courtney Becker | Courtney is a film, television and theatre major from New York City. In summer 2018, she was a James M. Naughton Fellow at The Philadelphia Inquirer. She is currently the editor in chief at The Observer, the university's independent, student-run newspaper.
"My journalism interests lie mainly in the realm of print or written news such as local news, breaking news or features. I hope to someday work as a professional journalist for a newspaper, magazine or online news outlet."
"Ideally, sports journalism would be my niche in the future as I pursue writing. Along with my passion for writing, I am drawn to publication design as I pursue a major in Visual Communication Design. My dream job is to write and design for a sports magazine such as Sports Illustrated."
Carlos De Loera | Carlos is a history major from Baldwin Park, Calif. He held a reporting internship with The Houston Chronicle in summer 2018. He is a reporter for The Observer and he also works at WVFI, the campus radio station. He is fluent in Spanish.
"As I journalist, I hope to report on the arts by providing an outlet for people to seek out entertaining and meaningful forms of media."
Darcy Dehais | Darcy is an American studies major from Overland Park, Kan. She is a sportswriter at The Observer, and she also holds an internship with Fighting Irish Media, the communications arm of the athletics department.
"I am interested in the power of journalism to affect social change. I hope to use the communications, interviewing and writing skills I've learned in the JED program to work with digital media or an online publication in public service, government or the non-profit realm."
Marie Fazio | Marie is an American studies major from Jacksonville, Fla. She was a 2018 reporting intern at The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She has also held an internship at The Florida Times-Union. She is currently a reporter and news designer at The Observer. She has also written for The Tab, a student-run online news outlet.
"I am interested in news reporting and feature writing, but ultimately I just love chasing stories!"
Lauren Fox | Lauren is a Program of Liberal Studies major from Leawood, Kan. In 2018, she was a summer reporting intern at The Kansas City Star. She has also held a reporting internship at The Dallas Morning News. She is currently a writer with The College Fix, an online news outlet.
"My interest in journalism stemmed from reading various works by George Saunders, whose voice shines through his pieces. I enjoy writing columns the most, for that is where I best employ my voice, but I also like covering breaking news, crime and the arts."
John Horlander | John is a film, television and theatre major from Louisville, Ky. He does play-by-play commentary of Fighting Irish football games for WVFI. In summer 2018, he was a broadcasting and sports information intern at the Louisville City F.C. soccer club. He is also the creator and host of a European soccer program on WVFI. He has written about Notre Dame sports for Golden Domer Daily and Campus Pressbox.
"For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be a play-by-play commentator for professional soccer. I've strived to diversify my education to learn the tools required to succeed in print, radio and television journalism."
Madeline Karnes | Madeline is an American studies major from Glencoe, Ill. She is a marketing manager and writer for Spoon University, an online food site aimed at college students. In summer 2017, Madeline was an editorial intern at JWC Media, which produces five publications focused on Chicago’s North Shore.
"I've always had a passion for writing which blossomed into an interest in journalism when I arrived at Notre Dame. I'm most interested in a career in marketing, public relations, and media."
Ryan Kolakowski | Ryan is an economics major from Marietta, Ga. In summer 2018, he held a reporting internship with The Marietta Daily Journal. He is a reporter with The Observer and a production assistant and camera operator with Fighting Irish Media.
"I am especially interested in sportswriting and broadcast journalism, and I would like to pursue a career as a beat reporter for a Major League Baseball team."
Alexandra Park | Alex is a sociology major and Latino Studies minor from Closter, N.J. After spending two years preparing for a career in medicine, she decided instead to pursue a career in journalism. In summer of 2018, she was a reporting intern at the Houston Chronicle. She is currently a news writer for The Observer. She is conversational in Korean and Spanish.
"Though medicine and journalism are vastly different fields, both require lifelong commitments to integrity and learning. I aspire to become a print or digital journalist who applies these values to the stories I have the privilege to write."
Madison Riehle | Madison is an American studies major from San Francisco. She currently works on the advertising team at The Observer. In summer 2017, she was a production intern with Fox 5 WNYW in New York.
"My minor is computing and digital technologies and I'm looking for a career where I can combine my journalism skills with my technical abilities."
Juan Jose Rodriguez | Juan Jose is a business analytics and film, television, and theatre major from Nashville. He is a student broadcaster with Fighting Irish Media where he handles play-by-play duties for soccer, baseball and softball. He is also an associate editor at Scholastic, Notre Dame's student-run magazine, and a contributing writer for Athlon Sports. He is fluent in Spanish.
"I have always loved to write and have enjoyed combining that interest with a passion for sports. As such, my goal is to pursue a career in sports journalism as either a sportswriter for a major publication or a TV play-by-play announcer."
