A digital journalist and professor, Mike works in business development for MediaShift.org and with the Google News Labs training program. He teaches digital journalism courses at Notre Dame. A former reporter at the LA Times and web editor at the Chicago Tribune, Mike was a full-time faculty member of 13 years at Northwestern, Arizona State University and DePaul University, training thousands of young journalists on digital storytelling.
His students’ projects have won first-place awards from ONA, Editor & Publisher (EPPY), SPJ National Mark of Excellence and four Peter Lisagor awards from the Chicago Headline Club. He’s a member of SPJ’s national board of directors and is actively involved in ONA. He holds an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University.
